M16L vs PG-Style Cable Glands

When building a pixel controller, remote receiver, or outdoor electronics enclosure, cable glands are easy to overlook. They are small parts, but they make a big difference in how clean, secure, and weather-resistant a finished build feels.
Common PG-style glands such as PG7, PG9, and PG11 are inexpensive and widely available. They work well in many thin-panel applications, but they are not always the best fit for thicker plastic enclosures, ammo cans, protective hard cases, or DIY controller boxes.

The Problem with Many Common PG-Style Glands
Many hobby-grade PG-style glands use a relatively short threaded body and a thin locknut. In thin panels, that may not be a problem. But in thicker plastic enclosures, there may not be much thread left for the locknut to grab.
When the locknut barely catches the threads, installation can feel less secure. The nut may be easier to strip, loosen, or pop off while tightening. That is especially frustrating when working inside a controller box where space is already limited.
PG11 glands can provide more cable room than smaller PG7 or PG9 glands, but they usually require a larger mounting hole. A larger hole removes more material from the enclosure wall, which is not always ideal when drilling into plastic boxes or protective cases.

The M16L gland is built around a different set of priorities: better thread engagement, a stronger locknut, a larger sealing nut, and a practical cable range for common controller-build wiring.

- 5–10mm cable range for many common round cable jackets
- Thicker locknut than many small PG-style glands
- Larger sealing nut for easier handling and tightening
- Smaller mounting hole than many PG11 glands, leaving more enclosure material intact
For DIY builders, that combination makes the M16L a useful “one size fits most” gland for single-cable pass-throughs.

Real-World Cable Fit Examples
The M16L gland has a 5–10mm cable range, which covers several common cable types used in pixel controller and outdoor electronics builds.
- xConnect-style pigtail cable: about 6.5mm OD for common 3x0.75mm² cable
- 16/3 SJTW outdoor power cord: commonly around 8.5mm OD
- 14/3 SJTW outdoor power cord: approximately 9.5mm OD
This makes the M16L useful for power-entry cords, single pigtail pass-throughs, receiver boxes, test boxes, and other outdoor electronics projects where a secure single-cable gland is needed.

Where M16L Glands Make the Most Sense
M16L long-thread glands are especially useful when you are working with thicker or more rugged enclosures, including:
- Pixel controller enclosures
- Remote receiver boxes
- Power-entry cable openings
- Plastic ammo cans
- Apache-style and Pelican-style protective cases
- Outdoor electronics boxes
- DIY weatherproof enclosures
They are also helpful when you want to reduce the number of different gland sizes you keep on hand. One M16L gland can cover a wide range of common round cable jackets, from smaller pigtail cable up to many 14/3 SJTW power cords.
When a Multi-Hole Gland May Be Better
The M16L gland is best for one round cable per gland. If you are routing multiple similar pigtails through the same wall of an enclosure, a multi-hole gland may be the cleaner option.
For grouped controller output pigtails, our M25 4-Hole Cable Gland is often a better fit. It allows up to four 5–7mm pigtail cables to pass through a single enclosure opening, reducing drilling and keeping cable bundles organized.
In simple terms:
- Use M16L for single-cable pass-throughs, power cords, thicker panels, ammo cans, and hard cases.

Installation Notes
As with any cable gland, fit depends on the actual outside diameter of the cable jacket. Cable sizes can vary by supplier, insulation type, and cord construction.
- Use with one round cable per gland.
- Measure your cable outside diameter before installation.
- Cables larger than 10mm OD should use a larger gland.
- Not intended for flat cable, loose individual wires, or multiple cables through one gland.
- Nylon fittings should be secure, but not over-tightened.

Common PG-style cable glands still have their place, especially in thin panels and low-cost builds. But when working with thicker plastic enclosures, power cords, ammo cans, or protective hard cases, the M16L Long-Thread Cable Gland offers several practical advantages.
